Heat forged, hand hammered, oil quenched, hand sharpened and hand polished - the Ichi-Maru and its cousin the Ranko are without a doubt the lowest priced consistently good quality fully functional katana on the market today, with the only difference between the two versions being the style of the tsuba.

The Ranko and Ichi-Maru are not only a structurally sound swords, but also have numerous features normally unheard of in this price range, such as real same (ray skin wrap on the handle), a razor sharp edge (with no secondary bevel) and not a single bit of plastic anywhere in its construction (just about ALL the others do).

Forged from 1045 High Carbon through hardened steel, the main reason for this swords low price is due to the shorter time needed to polish it. Higher carbon content swords (such as the 1060 Mokko) are correspondingly harder to polish, take longer to manufacture, and therefore cost correspondingly more.

While the blade is softer than the other Cheness Cutlery pieces, it is still more than suitable for the backyard cutter and can easily take on targets such as watermelons, pumpkins, water filled plastic bottles, pool noodles, cardboard boxes, etc on a daily basis, but is still able to handle the occasional tatami omote.
