A Kanbun-Shinto style blade with very little curvature (sori) the smiths name has faded on the tang and is no longer legible, though this particular style of sword was popular during the early Edo period and was most likely made between the 1640s and 1680s.
Unfortunately, how it came down to the modern era has been lost in the mists of time, though it was refitted just prior to the Meiji restoration, with the tsuba bearing the signature of the artisan Shigesada (1827-1893).
While the blade has some scratches and a notable kitae-ware line (non fatal flaw), the silk ito wrap has faded from jet black to grey and the saya a little worse for wear, overall it is in reasonable condition, especially for the price and could either be left alone as is or refitted and given a restorative polish to bring out its original beauty.
