Ewart Oakeshott, the renowned English sword enthusiast, researcher, and author, once described Henry V's sword as "one of the most beautiful medieval swords to handle I have ever known...it is balanced like a good fishing rod." This sword, designed as a superb weapon, is simple, practical, and of high quality. Its enormous, thick pommel, which looks misleadingly heavy, is actually hollow. The raised rims on either side were brazed onto an inner iron disc, and the recesses in the pommel were gilded with gold and accentuated with painted red crosses at the time of King Henry's funeral. The sword was originally hung above King Henry's chantry at Westminster Abbey until it was stowed away in an old chest. Rediscovered and cleaned by Oakeshott himself in 1951, it was added to the Abbey museum's display alongside the king's other accouterments, such as his helm, shield, and saddle. The blade shows signs of extensive use, appearing slightly narrowed from multiple sharpenings. The original grip is long gone, with the current wood grip believed to be a rough replacement. This sword is classified as a type XVIII in Oakeshott's Records of the Medieval Sword.
Henry V, a prince nearly killed by an arrow to the face at the age of 16, went on to lead a small band of knights and archers to victory over a much larger French force at the Battle of Agincourt, one of the most stunning accomplishments in English military history. This precise replica of Henry V's iconic sword, crafted by Windlass Steelcrafts, stays true to the original. It is a relatively short weapon designed for fast cutting and thrusting. The blade is slightly hollow ground and factory sharpened, offering beautiful balance and a lively feel in the hand. The pommel is hollow like the original, gold plated in the recesses, and features red enamel crosses for durability. This accurate, fully functional replica captures the essence of a true battle sword once wielded by the king of England. With just enough flair for elegance, it remains a pragmatic, effective cutting weapon. The sword includes a top-grain leather scabbard and belt, making it a perfect addition to any collection.
