About the Horimono Collection
The Horimono Collection Sword 1 is part of a series of swords that are a fusion of ancient craftsmanship and cutting-edge materials. Designed for warriors, collectors, and enthusiasts alike, this katana combines tradition with innovation and is solid bodied blade with significant blade pretense and some decent niku to the blade.
Here’s why it stands out:
- The blade is made from expertly tempered 65mn Spring Steel and is designed to be robust and forgiving of bad cuts with lots of niku (meat). It has a subtle but false hamon for that traditional look.
- The tsuba made from solid iron, the best choice for a battle ready blade regardless of price point. The Fuchigashira (handle fittings) are quality brass, most with a black coating. At this swords price point, cheap (and fragile) zinc aluminum is typically used, so it's a nice surprise to find strong, quality fittings at a sword at this price point.
- The full tang, wood core handle uses synthetic, cosmetically perfect/natural looking rayskin and rayon (faux silk) wrap tied nice and tight using a cost effective and patented method. No animals are harmed in the making of these swords (no buffalo horn, peakcocks, 100% animal product free production).
- Textured black saya to minimize the appearance of smudges or scratches that are bound to happen sooner or later.
- And then there is the perfectly lazer cut horimono engraving on the blade, similar to our limited edition line but at less than half the cost! Engravings like this can easily cost as much as the entire sword..
- Oh, and did we mention the price? I have NEVER seen a sword with so many positive features for such a low price. Early in 2024 we made a Limited Edition series of two swords by Ryujin with Horimono engravings that are on sale right now for $229.99. The difference? The Limited Edition blades use T10 tool steel blades with real hamon, so are more traditional (but not as tough), are faster and lighter and use slightly higher grade fittings overall. Up to you if if worth an extra $140 or so for a sword whose blade is actually less durable and forgiving of bad cuts.
In summary, every sword from the Horimono collection is a modern katana bridges eras, inviting you to wield a piece of history infused with contemporary craftsmanship. Whether you’re a martial artist, collector, or simply appreciate the artistry, this blade promises strength, beauty, and affordability. They aren't perfect, nor should your expectations get too out of hand for one of the cheapest functional blades on the market. But it is definitely one of those swords were you really get every single dollars worth of value squeezed out of it, and then some! Just great all around value.
