Continuing our themed katana series, our Summer Lotus Katana articulates every aspect of this fruitful season. The tsuba expresses a water garden, lotus flower and tree motif reflected in the snail and frog menuki (handle ornaments), symbols of fertility and good fortune. The blackened tsuba, fuchi, tsuka-ito (handle wrap) and fuchi-kashira contrast the real white same (ray skin) handle, the notched seppa (spacers), silver habaki (blade collar) and the green textured lacquered saya (scabbard). The 5160 forged carbon steel blade features a 1 ½" kissaki (point) and blade geometry conducive to rigorous cutting without chipping on a wide variety of cutting targets.

After years of eyeing functional katana, a the Summer Lotus caught my eye and an SBG sale made my decision to purchase easy. The sword arrived and my heart stopped as I un-sheathed the blade for the first time. The tightly wrapped tsuka, longer handle, and solid feel were delightful to hold and swing. The slightly heavier blade feel made slicing through test boxes effortless and greatly satisfying. The tsuba, seppa, and menuki are attractive, sturdy, and functional. The blade polish is decent with a little less refined beyond the yokote. The saya is of good construction, though some adhesive/laminate at the saya mouth/koi-kuchi is peeling. The Saya texture and forest green color are very pleasant, and field functional (not brightly colored). Sageo feels and looks real nice. I am very much looking at completing the swords of the seasons collection, especially the Winter Sun. You won't be disappointed!!
