1796 Light Cavalry Saber - Fully Functional Replica
Designed by Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant, the 1796 pattern light cavalry saber drew inspiration from the hussar swords of Central and Eastern Europe. As a young captain, Le Marchant noted the cumbersome nature of the heavy, overly long 1788 Pattern swords and believed that the "blades of the Turks, Mamelukes, Moors, and Hungarians (were) preferable to any other." This new design featured a pronounced curve, making it more effective in cavalry attacks, and a widened tip that enhanced its slashing power.
Primarily issued to British light dragoons and hussars, this saber was also used by the King's German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. Its blade profile became so revered that Prussian and other German states adopted its design throughout the 19th century.
This exact replica of an original antique weighs only 1 lb, 12 oz. The blade boasts an extreme distal taper, starting at a full 5/8" thick at the hilt and tapering to a mere 1/64" just an inch from the tip. Hand forged from resilient 1080 high carbon steel and spring tempered, it arrives fully sharpened and ready for display or reenactment.
The hilt mirrors the originals, featuring a 5/8" wide knuckle guard, steel spine, and contoured, ribbed leather grip. Complete with an accurately reproduced steel scabbard, this saber is a testament to the agility and ferocity of the light cavalry—a weapon designed to bring both elegance and terror to the battlefield.
