1) Select which Tsuba you wish to be mounted. All tsuba are made from solid iron and all but the Double "C" Ring Musashi tsuba feature REAL gold accents to give the design a splash of color at NO additional cost to you. The 'Front' is the Omote and is the side that faces the tsuka, the 'Back' is the Ura and faces the tip of the blade. This is so that when the sword is worn or displayed, the more attractive side faces onlookers, and when drawn, the less attractive part faces the opponent..
2) Select tsuka (hande) ito color from 8 different choices of synthetic silk rayon.
3) Select saya style and color. T923311 (burgundy) and T923611 (brown) both have a sparkling Maki-e finish under the lacquer. T923322 has a wood-grain finish. T923911 is the natural wood with clear lacquer finish. T923111 is a standard glossy black, T923121 has a textured finish to minimize finger prints and scratches.

This is my 14th sword purchase, and my 2nd katana. My interest is mainly in European and Chinese functional reproductions in the sub $200 range. My only other Japanese sword is the Ryujin 1045 Shirasaya I bought (mostly as an impulse buy) on this site along with the Ryujin 65MN Miao Dao (technically a Chinese saber). The size of this O-katana fits nicely in between the two, and the T10 blade rounds out a nice sampling of sword steels. Plus the three swords display together quite nicely.
I am not really a fanboy of katana, but I have become fond of my shirasaya and decided that my collection needed a proper katana with all the fittings. I decided that I wanted a sword that was a good compromise between price, functionality, and appearance. Selling points on this sword were the custom options, T10 steel, and traditional appearance, as well as the reasonable price. I made sure to read up on reviews and common issues before making my purchase.
I chose the black ito wrap, as it is my favorite color, classic, and my hand oils wouldn't mar the appearance of the cotton. As others have reviewed, the diamond spaces are indeed a bit uneven, and the dowel pins are somewhat wonky. But it feels tight and looks great from a few feet away.
I selected the black crane tsuba for it's simple and elegant design. Looks fantastic.
I wasn't as sure on the color for the saya as the pictures can be deceptive. I finally selected the redwood to match a red wood scabbard I made for my Windlass Euro sword. It actually did come with the black sageo, unlike the picture. The color is a much deeper shade of red than I expected, but I have to admit that it looks amazing. Much better than I thought it would. Really goes well with the black handle. The fit with the blade is just a tiny bit loose, but really quite acceptable.
The blade looks fantastic as well. Really attractive hamon line, something unique in my sword collection. The blade also feels much lighter and more elegant than I expected. Much lighter than the 1045 shirasaya. It has a nice factory edge, but is not razor sharp. Pretty typical of other sharps in my collection. I will hone it before trying any cutting.
Overall, I am pleasantly surprised. The flaws in the handle are as others have reviewed and acceptable for the price. Somewhere down the road I will probably buy some silk wrap and do a custom job. The blade could be a tad sharper but I do that myself anyway. I use the bench sander method found on this website. (My Windlass Euro sword came blunt but is sharp enough to shave with now) I am very pleased with the blade balance and appearance. The saya is really beautiful and really makes the whole thing work as a display piece, more than I expected. Deep red and black just belong together. It balances out the flaws in the handle, which is why I am still happy with giving this sword 5 stars.
