NEW: The Doomsday Barbarian Sword by Scorpion Swords

Scorpion swords Missouri based workshop has done it again with a fully functional Fantasy barbarian style sword called simply ‘the Barbarian’.

It starts life as does all the swords made by Scorpion Swords as a cut sword blank of 1095 carbon steel.

After drilling 14 holes in the hilt, the blade is then ground to shape – adding a fuller and shaping the edges.

Then follows the heat treatment process, firstly by heating the blade to 1500 degrees until it becomes non magnetic and then quenching it in brine (salt water). The 2nd step is Heat Tempering, which consists of heating the steel to 500 degrees for 2 hours, and letting it air cool. This makes for a Rockwell Hardness of approximately 57.

The walnut wood handle is then pinned and glued in place overnight, forming such a tight bond both with the glue and the 14 pins that it effectively is solidly fused in place and makes for a strong, one piece construction.

The handle is then refined, adding an additional 6 brass pins (to bring the total of handle contact points to 20), the blade sharpened and some engravings added before the handle is colored and the whole thing is finally ready to ship.

And there you have it, a very tough, very cool and super strong hand made in the USA Barbarian sword for under $300!

Two new Scorpion Swords added to the mix

Chris Palmer at Scorpion Swords has once again brought two new swords to his now quite extensive list of affordable beater swords based on history and the works of fiction.

The first is a fully functional replica of an ancient Thracian sword, the fearsome Rhomphaia – a sword/pole arm hybrid that was used with great effect against the ancient Greeks and Romans (indeed, it was the awesome cutting power of this blade that forced the ONLY documented change/upgrade to Roman armor – requiring some extra reinforcing bars in their helmets!).

Just one look at this beast of a blade and you can see why such an adjustment might well have been needed!

And for fans of fiction and unique fantasy blades, the ‘Mummy Sword’ of Ardeth Bay from the Mummy Returns movie is a blade that has been crying out for a decent and fully functional replica to be made: and Chris’s tribute to this movie sword is a very faithful and good one that Ardeth would have been proud to carry into battle.

Even though it is a fantasy piece, it is engineered based on solid principles and can deliver a great deal of downward cutting power with its optimized, gracefully curving edge.

Both are available here in Scorpion Swords section of our site for a VERY reasonable $289.99 – which is truly great value for hand made in the USA, almost indestructible sword like these.

Always great to see some new and unique affordable swords hit the market – especially in these times when new swords are few and far between..

New from Scorpion Swords: the Daab of Charn Chai

It has been a while since we have posted anything new, but with Christmas coming in 8 weeks time – the mothballed sword industry has been trying to wake up in time for the expected pick up in sales this season usually brings. Of course, these days nothing can be taken for granted, but it is great to see that our friend Chris Palmer has been busy in the lead up and has just released a brand new design – a low point of balance, super fast in the hand indestructible version of the classic Thai Daab fighting sword..

Used either one handed, but long enough in the handle to be used in two hands, or used with one in each hand, the Daab is a highly versatile sword with a long (around 4000 year) history and echoed in the sword designs of neighboring Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

A fitting tribute, Scorpions version is a little heftier than a traditional Daab but maintains the low polar point of balance these blades are famous for and can deliver full force blows with the arm or super fast cuts and hacks by simply rotating the wrist and letting the blades weight, speed and momentum to do all the work.

A real bargain at just $249.99 – the only caveat, due to the recent influx of people preparing for Christmas orders the lead time on all Scorpion Swords has blown out from 6-8 weeks to 8-10 weeks time, meaning that even if you ordered it now, it is not guaranteed to arrive in time for the big day.

Second Dune Sword by Scorpion Swords

The first House of Atreides Sword by Missouri based artisan and sword maker, Chris Palmer from Scorpion Swords, proved to be quite a hit. But a lot of customers were also asking for another design based on the ‘training swords’ seen in the 2021 movie, and so Chris got to work recreating it..

As with all his swords, he starts with a precisely cut sword blank made from 1095 carbon steel, into which he drills 6 holes for the handle mounting in preparation.

The basic blank is then shaped and given a rough edge before heat treatment.

The heat treatment itself consists of first hardening the blade by heating the steel to 1500 degrees until it becomes non magnetic and it is then quenched in brine (salt water). It is then tempered by heating the blade for 2 hours and then letting it air cool.

The blade is then sharpened and melded with a black linen mircarta handle, pinned and epoxied in place.

The end result of this technique essentially fuses the handle to the blade, with no looseness and no moving parts, making it as strong as humanly possible and essentially makes it a one piece construction.

All in all, it is an extremely tough, extremely durable blade – hand made in the USA and a total bargain at just $249.99.

INTRODUCING: THE DARK KNIGHTS TEMPLAR SWORD

It is one of their most innovative and interesting designs to date – and perhaps one of the toughest arming swords history has ever seen – with their latest sword model, the Dark Knights Templar Sword

Most uniquely, the sandwich tang handle – one of the most durable designs ever invented – is not only a part of the handle but the black linen mircarta forms a short, brass pinned ‘cross guard’ from which the steel, which is all one piece construction, protrudes from within the mircarta wedge producing an attractive two tone effect.

While it may not be the most agile blade, weighing in 3 and 1/2lbs – it’s one piece construction and superior tempering ensures that it is as tough as nails, and considering it is hand made in the USA, is an absolute bargain at $269.99.
